Essential Music Theory  How to build musical scales

Pentatonic scales

There are other scales in music as well as the major scale and the three minor scales we have covered.

Pentatonic scales are widely used, especially by guitarists and are named after the Greek word for five, 'Penta', as they only have 5 notes.

Pentatonic scales are commonly found in folk music, but are also found in all other forms of music and are extremely useful for improvisation.

There are both major and minor pentatonic scales. We will look at the major pentatonic scale first.
