Essential Composition Course  How to start composing with your PC

Time and space

If possible, have your music recording equipment set up in one fixed place. These days with laptops and virtual studio software, this place does not have to be big, but it does really help your creative flow if all you have to do to get started is to switch it on. Try to keep your music PC just for music. It is not for shopping, games, surfing or your loved ones to use. If that sounds selfish, it is, because creating music is selfish – glory in it!

Everybody has different times and situations where they feel musically creative. Try to adapt to these times and situations. I know someone who gets his best ideas on a bike, and then sings them to his voicemail! Many MP3 players allow you to sing ideas into them. Have a pen and notepad to write down that great chord sequence you have just thought of. If you hear something on the radio that inspires you – note the title, as quite often, hearing it again when you are by your PC will bring back that inspiration. In other words, do not get caught without the means to record your ideas. Also, keep every idea you have. You may not know what to do with it now, but its time will come.
