Essential Composition Course How to start composing with your PC
When musicians used tape, it was quite tricky to change the structure of a song. With a PC, you can change anything, at any time. This can be hugely beneficial to you. It may be that you have a little idea for a riff, or chord sequence, but no idea as to where it is to go in a song. Just record the idea, and worry about the structure later. You may find, as I have, that you think of an idea that does not fit the song you are doing at the moment. Quickly create another song file and record it there. I always have an “ideas” folder on my PC, which I dip into from time to time for inspiration.
Also, the PC can layer your music vertically. Try recording some of the chords you have learned onto your PC, make copies of them, and play them back with different bass notes below, or tune above. Try your riffs at different speeds, or transposed into a different key. Try using the quantise function in your software to create different rhythms. Try cutting your chord recordings into 2 beat lengths, and sticking them back together in a different order. Your software can do all this for you, so try everything!
